Ann Gibbins (1841-1862)

Reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland

In 1841, Ann, aged 8 months, was living at Whiteway Lodge (circled in the map above) with her parents, John, a labourer, and Ann. They had married in Minchinhampton in 1833, and both came from out of the area, John from Wiltshire and Ann from Cirencester. Like the Newtons, also in the area, they lived on the margins of the parish, with no connections to it.

In 1851, they had moved to 3 Oxford Street, Westbury on Trym, just to the north of Bristol. John was now a gardener. In April 1862, she married George Francis Buck, a house painter. He had married Sarah Watts in December 1859, but she had died soon after, in March 1861. He and Ann, and their growing family – they had ten children – lived in Bristol until their death’s, his in 1907 and Annie’s in 1923, when she was aged 82.
