Caroline Wittaker 1836-1891

Caroline was an outlier in the 1841 Census for North Nibley, as neither she, nor the rest of her family, father William, mother Mary, and brother George, were born in Gloucestershire. The variabilty of their surname made them difficult to research. Inb fact, it took me some time to realise that William Wittaker was the William Widigore listed on the Tithe Terrier of 1846.

The family rented a cottage at the bottom of Frog Lane, which is no longer standing and William was listed as being a colt breaker. In 1848 George emigrated to the USA.

In 1851, William (now widowed and described as a horse breaker) is lodging in the adjacent parish, Alkington.

In 1860, Caroline married Robert Stringfellow, a joiner, in Liverpool. They had seven children, and lived in Everton. Caroline died at the age of 55, and was buried at Anfield Cemetery. Two years later, Robert married Martha Price.
