In the ’41 Census, Edward Collins (his mother’s maiden name was Collins), George, Ann and Thomas were living at Sandfield Farm, with their parents, Thomas and Ann, their uncle, George, and two farm servants.
George, Edward were baptised in Newington Bagpath, a neighbouring parish. Their father is recorded as a yeoman, living at Scrubbitts Farm in the parish. Three years later, around 1839, the family had moved to Sandfield Farm, as that is where the remaining siblings were baptised.
Thomas died at the age of 8 months, and died shortly after the ’51 Census, aged 14. In 1844, Sarah Caroline was born, followed in 1846 by another Thomas.
In the 1861 Census, Sandfield Farm was occupied by an agricultural labourer and a housekeeper, while the family were living at Rushmire Farm, just over the border of the parish, in Wotton under Edge.
Thomas died in December 1862 and, in the ’71 his widow was living at the Butts with Edward Collins. George, the only other son still living, was living at Rushmire Farm with his wife and children. Albert King was farming at Sandfield. In ’81, George and his family had returned to Sandfield, while Edward Collins and his mother were still living in Wotton. This continued over the next decades, until the 1911 Census.
George died at the age of 84. In 1974, Mr R Lewin listed the monuments in St Martins Churchyard, many of which have since disappeared. There was a monument to several members of the family, listed under memorial 145 ( link )
Edward was left and £40 annuity in his father’s will, with the condition that he wasn’t allowed to dispose of it, plus £200, so it appears that he had limited capabilities
