Elizabeth Organ (1839-1891)

In 1841, Elizabeth was living with Samuel Organ and his wife Ann (nee Bird) on Nibley Street. She had been baptised at Nibley Tabernacle in 1839 as the illegitimate daughter of Mahala Organ, who was the daughter of Jonas Organ. Also in the household were two of Samuel’s daughters – Thurza and Mary.

Mahala was living in Woodmancote, Dursley, as a farm servant in 1841, and in 1848 she married Thomas Wardle, a mariner from Hull. In 1851 the couple were living in Maryport Street in Berkeley. Elizabeth was now Elizabeth Wardell, and recorded as being a mariners daughter. Also in the household was their daughter Arabella.

In 1861, Mahala (now called Amelia), Arabella, and a new child, were living on Barrs Lane, North Nibley. Ten years later, William, now an agricultural labourer, was living in Lisle Cottage in North Nibley with Mahala (back to being Mahala) and their son William. William died later that year and, in 1891 the widowed Mahala was living alone near the New Inn in Waterley Bottom, Nibley. She died six years later in 1887.

In 1861, Elizabeth was working as a servant in Clifton, Bristol. In the same household was Tamar Trotman, also from North Nibley.

In 1858, she married Phillip Marmont, an ostler, at St James in Gloucester. At the time of the next census, they were living in St Owens, Gloucester, with their son Frederick.

An indication of life in Gloucester is given in the clipping below, from the Gloucester Citizen of the 8th August 1879.

In 1881, they were living with two daughter in Hare Lane, Gloucester. Elizabeth was listed as being a laundress.

In 1891, she was living in the Lunatic Asylum. The next month she was returned to home, but recorded as not being improved.
