Jane Williams (1832-

In 1841 Jane was living at 7, Barrs Lane, with her father Joseph and mother Elizabeth, and her brother Henry. Both Joseph and Henry were stonemasons. Jane had four more siblings, but they were no longer at home. All the children were baptised at St Martins.

The house was owned by Joseph, and, in recognition of that, Henry was awarded 2 perches of land in the Enclosure Award of 1867 (about the size of the playing area of a tennis court). Joseph also rented an orchard in Forthay.

Elizabeth died two years later and, in 1851, Joseph, Henry and Jane were living together. After Joseph’s death in 1858, Henry lived in a house in Purnells Park.

In 1856 Jane married William Philpotts, a carpenter, in Gloucester. William was also living in Nibley at the time. In 1861, they were living on George St, Newport, with their two young daughters. The elder, Julia, had been born in North Nibley in 1858, so they moved after then. In the same household is the 30-year-old John Organ, a labourer from Nibley.

After that, the family disappear. They probably emigrated, though I can find no record of it.
