In 1841, Mary and Caroline lived with their parents Thomas, a labourer, and Susannah, and their brothers Matthew and George. The house was leased from Mrs Barton and is numbered 161 on the Tithe Map

There was a third daughter, Rachel, who was working as a servant elsewhere in the parish at the date of the census.
In ’51, George, Caroline and Mary had followed her route and were away from home, working as servants. Matthew had married and was living with his wife and two daughters.
Mary married William Hawkes, a policeman, in 1857, when she was 23, in Putney. She lived in Dallas Road, Lewisham for the rest of her life, dying in 1905, having had nine children.
Caroline married Stephen Woodward in 1858, when she was 22. Before that, when she was 18, she had an illegitimate son, William. In 1861, they were living next to Caroline’s parents on the Little Green in Nibley. They had four children before Caroline’s death in 1875, aged 39. Stephen married again in 1882, and had two more children.
