William (a labourer) and his wife Hannah lived with their five children, Thomas, James, Moses, Sarah and Ann in the area circled on the map above. All were baptised at St Martins Church. They had two other daughters, Jane and Mary, who were living away from home in 1841, and a further daughter, Elizabeth, who was born in 1844.

In 1851, the family were living on Bradley Green, Wotton under Edge. Sarah was living in Horton, as a servant on a farm. In 1861, Moses, a labourer, was still living with his parents on the Green. In ’71 he was living there with his widowed father, who was recorded as being a pauper. William died in 1876 and, four years later Moses was boarding at the Bell Inn, Barton Street, Gloucester. A decade later, he was boarding on the Street, in Nibley. In 1894 he died, aged 63. His address is recorded as being Back Lane, Wotton, at the time.

In 1852, aged 16, Sarah married George Fiddler at Marshfield. By the time of the next census, they had two sons, William James and Thomas. But George died in 1866. Three years later, Sarah married John Lewis, a pensioner (presumably from the Army) and he is living with Sarah and her two children on Main Street, Marshfield. But he dies in 1873.

In the 1881 Census I can find Sarah’s sons, both of whom have changed their surnames to Fielding. Both are in South Wales (Williams James in Ystradyfodwg and Thomas in Llanwonno) and working as colaminers. I can’t trace Sarah.

But, in the 1911 Census, Sarah reappears, living with her son Thomas and his family. A Sarah Lewis, of her age, is recorded as dying in the Gloucester Registration area in 1920, when they were 84.

Ann was living with her parents at Bradley Green in 1851 and in ’61 was at Starfall Farm, working as a dairymaid. Ten years later, she was working as a domestic servant at Shipton Moyne. In 1875, Ann married John Clifford, a farm labourer from Ashton Keynes. John had been widowed 2 years previously. John and Ann had four children. John had previously had three children. John and Ann lived at Daisy Green until her death in 1923, aged 86. John died in 1917.
