Organ family – Daniel and William

Daniel (1831-1906 )

William (1834-1845)

Both boys were baptised at St Martins, North Nibley.

There are many Organs in my cohort, all of whom were related. The best place to view these connections is Andrew Plaister’s book on the Organs, and the facebook page dedicated to the family.

In 1841, Jesse Organ, a farmer, and his wife Hannah (nee Robinson) lived in the property circled in blue. With them were their five children, Thomas, Alfred, Sarah, Daniel, and William.

Ten years late, in 1850, there was a Removal Order to remove Thomas (‘illegitimate son of Hannah, wife of Jesse Organ’), his wife Hannah and his daughters Hannah (aged 4) and Mary Jane (aged 1) on the basis that they had been married in Kings Stanley in 1845. The family lived in Coaley after the Removal Order.

Daniel, Jesse’s father, had died in 1816, referring to Jesse as John in his will, leaving the bulk of his estate to Jesse’s brother Jeremiah. When Sarah, Jesse’s mother, died a year later, she left various legacies to her children, but left all her ‘household goods, chattels and furniture whatsoever which were given to me by my late mother Mary Higgins’. Jesse was also made executor of her will.

William died in 1845, aged 8.

In 1851, Daniel was living in Bradley Street, Wotton under Edge, with George Derrett, a master tailor. A year later, he married Emily Wathen in St Pauls church on Portland Square, Bristol. The couple had three children.

In 1861, Daniel and Ann were living in Old Town, Wotton under Edge with their 2 children, Ellen and Arthur. Their elder daughter had died, aged 7. Daniel was a tailor.

The couple continued living in Wotton, first in Old Town, then in Haw Street. Daniel died in 1906, in Leeds, aged 75. His address on the probate is given as 19 Ebor Mount, Leeds, and his estate was valued at £1319 0s 5d.

A memorial on the wall of Wotton Tabernacle reads –

‘Daniel Organ, died 7/3/1906, 76, interred at Woodhouse Cemetary, Leeds. Emily Ann Organ, died 5/7/1902, aged 71. Emily Elizabeth (Bessie) daughter of above, died 9/7/1859 aged 7’

Daniel’s son was living in Headingly, Leeds at the time of his father’s death, and I presume he died whilst on a visit.
