There are many Organs in my cohort, all of whom were related. The best place to view these connections is Andrew Plaister’s book on the Organs, and the facebook page dedicated to the family.

In the 1841 Census, the family were recorded as living in Tumpy Green, at the eastern end of the parish, with three lodgers. Benjamin, an agricultural labourer, and Harriet were their parents. Harriet died in 1850 in Bristol and, at the time of the ’51 Census, the widowed Benjamin was living in Barton Street, St Georges, Bristol, with his four children. Mary and Rebecca were working as power loom weavers, and David and his father were labourers.

In 1861, Benjamin (now recorded as a gardener) was still living on Barton Street, with his daughter Sarah (recorded as housekeeper), his married daughter Mary and her daughter, and his daughter Rebecca. Mary Ann and Rebecca were both cotton weavers.

David was living with his wife Sarah in Lead House Lane, Holy Trinity, Bristol and is recorded as a ‘gardener carter’. Sarah was a tailoress. Ten years later, the couple (now a corn porter and a charwoman) were living in St Pauls, where they still lived until his death in 1903.

Returning to Mary, although she was living with her father and daughter in 1861, and recorded as married, Emma, her daughter, was baptised as Emma Cawbleath Organ, daughter of Mary Ann Organ, in 1860, in Bristol. In 1864 (named Marianne Organ) she was married to Jacob Fry at Charfield church.

In 1871, the couple were living with their two children in Charfield. Emma was working as a servant in Bristol. Benjamin died in 1875 and, in 1881 and 1891, Emma and her children were still living in Charfield. In 1901, she was living with her son and his family in Swindon. She died in Thornbury Workhouse in 1903, and was buried in Charfield.

In 1867, in Charfield, Rebecca married William Tanner, an agricultural labourer and, in 1871, they were living in Kingswood, adjacent to Wotton under Edge, with their two children. Rebecca was recorded as being a woollen cloth weaver. They lived on the Hillesley Road with their growing family (they eventually had four children). William died in 1897, aged 55. Rebecca died at 76. Until then, she lived with her adult children in Kingswood. She was buried in Kingswood churchyard.

Sarah married George Norris (or Kornish) in 1863. They had six children. It 1871 they were living in Gloucester St, St Georges, Bristol. George was a shear grinder at an iron works. Next door was Benjamin and his second wife. He was recorded as being ‘blind from rheumatics’. In 1881, the family were living in Barton Street, and George was employed as a broker and general dealer in a marine stores. He died in 1889 and, two years later, Sarah was living with their children in Church street, St Philip and Jude, Bristol.

I can’t find her in 1901, but, in 1911, she was living alone in Hampton Street, Bristol, a pensioner. She died in 1919, aged 78.
