Stephens family

Robert (1835-1912)

William (1836-1894)

Thomas (1838-1848)

Emily (1841-1847)

At the time of the ’41 Census, the Stephens family were living near Crowell Brook in Nibley parish. Edwin was a cloth dresser, born in Kings Stanley, and married Ann Braham in Uley.

Both Robert and William were baptised at Uley church, Thomas at the Non Conformist chape in Nibley, and no baptism can be found for Emily.

In 1851, Edwin, Ann, Robert and William were all clothworkers. Two more sons had been born to the couple – Thomas and Edwin. The older Thomas had died in 1848, aged 10. Emily had died in 1847, aged 6.

In ’61, Edwin and Ann were living in Pitcourt with their two younger sons. Robert had moved to Newport, South Wales, and was lodging in the household of his elder brother in Bailey Street, working as a carpenter. Ten years later, he was lodging with Charles Stevens and his family in Christina Street, Cardiff, employed as a mechanic. He was there, still, in the next census, employed as a carpenter.

Sadly, he was living in Cardiff workhouse in 1891 and 1901. He died in 1912, aged 77

William was living with his wife and 2 children in North Street, Bedwelty, in 1861, working as an ostler. He had married Sarah Ford in 1855, in Newport. In 1871, he had become a miner. The family (the couple had four children) lived in Bedwelty until William died in 1894, aged only 58.
