With thanks to Geoff Gwatkin for allowing use of his copy of the 1847 Tithe map
Daniel Powell, a blanket maker, owned 38 and 39 on the Tithe map above, now Woodlands Cottage. It was leased by his son Edwin who lived there with his family.
In turn, Edwin owned properties 49 to 51. He used 51 as a workshop, and Daniel lived in 49. A John Powell owned 64,65,66.
In the 1841 Census, William, Daniel’s sone, lived next door to his father (who was widowed and living with another son, Thomas. William was married to Harriet Chapell (she was 15 years his senior). They had two children – David and Ellen.
Sadly, David died in 1843, when he was only two.
In 1851, the couple had another daughter, Emma, and the couple were living in the parish. William was a labourer, and Harriet a laundress.
In 1861, the family were living on Barrs Lane. Both Emma and Ellen were woollen cloth weavers.
In 1866, Ellen married Samuel Cornock at St Martins and in 1871 the couple were living on the Street, Nibley, with their two daughters. Samuel was a woollen cloth weaver. Emma was still living with her parents on Barrs Lane.
In 1881 Samuel had become a pin maker, and he, Ellen, and their five children were living in Kingswood. Ten years later, they were living at New Mills, in Kingswood, which had become an elastic factory. Samuel was either a fireman or a foreman, which Ellen was an india picker. In 1901, still at New Mills, the couple were living with three of their children. Both were working at the factory and Samuel was deaf.
In 1911, Samuel and Ellen, now both retired, were living with their daughter Alice and a lodger. Ellen died in 1915, aged 76, and was buried in Kingswood.
